What is physical therapy?

Physical therapy is a branch of medical professionals that specialize in the habilitation or rehabilitation of disabilities either congenital or acquired which results from, or secondary to, injury or disease. It deals with the correction and prevention of physical impairments as well as the attainment, maintenance, and enhancement of functional activities of daily living.

The practice of physical therapy

The practice of physical therapy is conducted by a skilled and licensed professional called a physical therapist. Physical therapists examine, evaluate and administer treatment which includes, but not limited to, the use of physical measures, modalities and activities for preventative and therapeutic purposes. The performance of such services are for the purposes of preventing or reducing the incidence and severity of physical disability, bodily malfunction and pain.

Physical therapy is used to treat a variety of conditions, including:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Rotator cuff

  • Foot, ankle and knee problems
  • TMJ dysfunction

Jolene Lusterman, PT, DPT
Physical Therapist

Jolene is a graduate of Penn State University, where she received her Bachelor of Science degree. She later received her Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree with honors and awards for excellence in research from Touro College. As part of her doctoral degree, Jolene completed clinical rotations treating a variety of orthopedic and sports, pediatric, neurological injuries, as well as being trained to treat vestibular and balance disorders. Jolene has received ongoing training and mentoring for the evaluation and treatment of pelvic floor dysfunction.

Jolene was a competitive dancer through high school and college, as well as playing lacrosse and field hockey in high school. Jolene also enjoys running, aerobic classes, yoga and recreational dance classes.
